In the early 1970's, The Detroit Emeralds were a successful vocal group signed to Detroit's Westbound Records. The group was originally made up of Ivory and Abrim Tilmon and their two other brother brothers. The other two brothers left the group early on, and childhood friend James Mitchell joined - forming a trio. Later the group was joined by Marvin Willis. By 1974 the group had fallen apart, Abrim and Mitchell were, at one point, leading separate outfits trying to use the name. In 1976, Mitchell, joined by his brother and others, formed the group The Floaters. In 1977, The Floaters released the song Float On - one of the biggest selling records of the year. In the spoken song, each member of the band introduces themselves by name and astrological sign. The group released four albums together, however this was their only hit.
