AL BOWLLY - My Woman >< WHITE TOWN - Your Woman

This is the original song that was sampled by the British one-man band White Town for the 1997 hit Your Woman. It is a cover of My Woman - a Bing Crosby song - recorded in 1932 in London by Al Bowley. This version from Bowlly appears in the movie Pennies From Heaven and it appears on the movie's soundtrack. Bowley was a popular Mozambican born South African singer/songwriter and jazz crooner in the 1930's British scene, and he had many popular songs including Goodnight Sweetheart.

Lalo Schifrin is a heavily decorated Argentine pianist and composer well know for film and TV scores - such as the theme music for Mission Impossible. Danube Incident is a piece that Schifrin produced for the TV series Mission Impossible in 1969. This piece has been sampled a dozen times. In 1994 the English trip-hop group Portishead sampled Danube Incident on Sour Times off their debut album.

This 1965 song by Len Barry prompted a lawsuit from Motown Records who claimed that the song was a copy of Ask Any Girl - released by The Supremes on the B-side of Baby Love. After years of fighting the charges, Barry agreed to pay Motown 15% of the songs royalties. In 1995 Scottish singer Edwyn Collins sampled 1-2-3 on his song A Girl Like You - it was his biggest hit.

In 1965 on their follow-up to (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction the Rolling Stones took the riff from the song Louie Louie to use on their international hit Get Off My Cloud. Doo-wop singer/songwriter Richard Perry was best known for this classic original song, which ended up being a big hit for The Kingsmen in 1963. In 1959 Barry had sold the rights for his song for $750 - which he needed to pay for his wedding. The song went on to be the most recorded rock song ever. By the mid-eighties Barry was on welfare living at his mother's house when a settlement over the song finally made him a millionaire.

Chief Rocker Busy Bee is a old school hip hop MC and musician, and he was once part of Afrika Bambaataa's Zulu Nation. He is also known from his appearance in the 1983 movie Wild Style, and in 2007's Paid In Full. In 1999 singer and rapper Kid Rock took vocals from Busy Bee's 1982 single Making Cash Money for his hit single Bawitdaba.

I Will Follow Him in 1963 was the biggest hit for Little Peggy March. The pop singer was discovered at the age of thirteen, and when this song was released Lee was only 14 - making her the youngest female artist with a number one hit. In 2004 the South African rock band Seether used the riff from I Will Follow Him on their track Same Damn Life - off their sixth album.

In 2002 Linkin Park released Reanimation - their first remix album. Their track H! Vltg3 features Evidence, Pharoahe Monch and DJ Babu, and samples from the song Family by Lamont Dozier. The Family song comes off the legendary songwriter/producers 1977 album Peddlin' Music On The Side, which also features his song Going Back To My Roots which was later covered by Oddesey.

In 1966 the Northern Irish band Them released their second album - Them Again. The band featured Van Morrison as lead singer and songwriter. I Can Give You Everything was not one of the two songs written by Morrison on the album, the song was a popular song covered by many garage and beat bands at the time. In 1996 this was one of the songs Beck sampled for Devil's Haircut off 1996's Odelay - his fifth studio album.

Bobby Parker's 1961 UK single Watch Your Step was a hit record for the rhythm and blues guitarist, it also was influential to some of the biggest names in rock and roll. This often covered song's guitar riff was the inspiration for several Beatles songs, such as I Feel Fine and Day Tripper. Led Zeppelin based their 1969 classic Moby Dick on the riff, and others have used this riff too, including Deep Purple and The Allman Brothers Band.

In 1998 The Offspring released their fifth studio album Americana. This album that marked the band's shift from punk rock to pop punk was recorded mostly in 1996. A few of the band's most commercially successful songs came off this album, such as Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) - which charted in over 15 countries. The intro to the song is a German-sounding nonsense phrase sampled from the intro to Def Leppard's 1983 Rock Of Ages.
