LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY - Love Sensation >< BLACK BOX - Ride On Time

In 1989 3 Italian producers released their single Ride On Time that they credited to Black Box, it took the clubs by storm. Unfortunately they made no money off their hit because they stripped the vocals right out of Dan Hartman's disco classic Love Sensation, which he had written and produced for Loleatta Holloway in 1980. In 1991 Holloway made out very well when Marky Mark sampled her on his number one hit Good Vibrations, he paid her royalities and hired her for his tour.

VERNON BURCH - Get Up >< DEEE-LITE - Groove Is In The Heart

Groove Is In The Heart was a worldwide hit for Deee-lite when the funky dance band debuted in 1990. The band samples from more than a half dozen records for this song, including multiple elements from Vernon Burch's Get Up from 1979. Burch is a Washington DC born funk and soul singer/guitarist that recorded several albums in the late 1970's and early 1980's, most notably on Casablanca and Chocolate City Records.

In 1998 Music Sounds Better With You was released by Stardust, a French disco house band that included Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter and a couple of his friends. This one hit wonder sampled Big Time Rush's Music Sounds Better With You, and also Chaka Khan's chart topping 1981 hit Fate. The Stardust release was a huge hit and Bangalter was offered a lot of money to release full Stardust album - it was an offer that he turned down.

JOHNNIE TAYLOR - What About My Love >< SHAPESHIFTERS = Lola's Theme

Johnnie Taylor's 1982 track What About This Love was a favorite of Lola's - the wife of one of the Shapeshifters, a British house duo. The song Lola's Theme was originally released on the Shapeshifter's Nocturnal Groove label as an instrumental single built around the string arrangement intro of the beloved Taylor song. The song became so popular that when it was licensed to Positiva Records the sampled part was re-recorded and vocals were added. The new release of the song was quickly on the top of UK and US charts.

CAROL WILLIAMS - Love Is You >< SPILLER - Groovejet (If This Isn't Love)

This mega-hit from Italian DJ/producer Christiano Spiller was built on top of Love Is You, a 1977 disco classic from Carol Williams and the Salsoul Orchestra. Spiller's Groovejet was originally released as an instrumental on an EP in 1998 with no vocal. When the song was picked up by Positiva Records in 2000, British singer/songwriter Sophie Ellis-Bextor was brought in to write and sing on the track. Legend has it that in August 2001 Groovejet was the first song played on a ipod - a prototype. (now discontinued)

Breakwater was a 1970's funk/soul band from Philadelphia that recorded two albums, one in 1978 and one in 1980. The later, released the year the band broke up, featured Release The Beast. The song was first sampled by MURS in 2004 The following year in 2005 Daft Punk sampled Breakwater for Robot Rock. Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter said of this track - it is "a tribute to the power of heavy rock chords."

In 1979 legendary keyboarder/composer George Duke released Master Of The Game - one of two albums by Duke to feature a young Sheila E., years before she teamed up with Prince. I Love You More off that album was sampled by house music duo Daft Punk in 2001 for Digital Love. This electronic pop song from the French house music duo's Aerodynamite album is known for it's uncommon solo.

Archie Bell & The Drells were one of the top selling Philly soul acts on Philadelphia International Records. Archie Bell is the brother of Jerry Bell, lead singer of Motown's Dazz Band. The band came from Houston, Texas, where they produced their first big hit Tighten Up in 1968. In 2001 the British electronic band sampled Bell's Strategy for their Muhammad Ali off their third album.

Thomas Newman is an American composer that is well know for his award winning film scores. He has been nominated for 12 academy awards, and has won many awards including six Grammys. In 2000 British DJ/producer Jakatta sampled some pieces from Newman's American Beauty soundtrack for his hit record American Dream. This track was unusual for a dance track because most of the song is is 6/4 time - rather than the usual 4/4.
