SLY & THE FAMILY STONE - Into My Own Thing  ><  FATBOY SLIM - Weapon Of Choice

Fatboy Slim had a huge crossover hit with Weapon Of Choice in 2000, which was originally released on the B-side of their Star 69 single. The song features P-Funk legend Bootsy Collins on bass and lead vocals, and the song's video was an award winning short film starring Christopher Walkin and directed by Spike Jonze. Sly And The Family Stone's Into My Own Thing is one of the half-dozen songs sampled in the song.

SLY & THE FAMILY...  - Trip To Your Heart   ><  LL COOL J  - Mama Said Knock You Out

After LL Cool J received a disappointing response from his third album, he was struggling with his direction as a rapper. The 22-year old rapper confided with his grandmother about his being dissed by some other rappers, and his struggles surviving with the boom of gangster rap. She had a simple piece of advise for him - "oh baby, just knock them out". And he did just that, the single for Mama Said Knock You Out won him a Grammy. The song heavily samples from Sly & The Family Stone's Trip To Your Heart.

SLY...  - You Can Make It If You Try  ><  JUNGLE BROTHERS - Because I Got It Like That

In 1989 the Jungle Brothers released their debut album Straight Out The Jungle. The highly acclaimed album features the song Because I Got It Like That, which samples from from Sly And The Family Stone's You Can Make It You Try. The song is off their 1969 Stand album, which introduced numerous classic songs. It was this album that secured Sly And The Family Stone a spot at the upcoming Woodstock Festival. His performance there is considered to be one of the best performances at the famous 3-day festival in 1969.

SLY AND THE... - Remember Who You Are   ><    A TRIBE CALLED QUEST - After Hours

In 1990 A Tribe Called Quest released their debut album People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm. The third song on the album is After Hours, which samples from Sly And The Family Stone's Remember Who You Are. The song is off the 1979 album Back On The Right Track. This ninth album from the band was the first album not produced by Sly. Remember Who You Are was one of the singles off the album, it didn't receive much attention at the time.

DAVE GRUSIN - Thank You (Falettinme Be...    ><    JANET JACKSON - Rhythm Nation

In 1989 Janet Jackson released the song Rhythm Nation alongside production team Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Jackson performed the song for Queen Elizabeth II for her 90th birthday party - she split her pants in the performance. When she performed the song at Super Bowl XXXVIII, her breast was exposed on television by accident. The song is built on a sample of the baseline of Sly And The Family Stone's Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), a favorite song of Jimmy Jam's.

In 1989 hip-hop trio De La Soul released their innovative debut album 3 Feet High And Rising. The song Description samples it's riff and drums from Sly And The Family Stone's 1971 song Poet. The song appears on the band's fifth studio album - 1971's  There's A Riot Going On. The album is considered to be one of the greatest albums of all-time, and it influenced the development of a new style of funk that was heard from artists like Funkadelic and The Ohio Players.

SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE - Life   ><   CYPRESS HILL - Insane In The Brain

In 1993 Cyress Hill released their signature song Insane In The Brain, a diss song that was retaliating on rapper Chubb Rock. There are many records that were sampled on this song, among them is Sly And The Family Stone's Life. The song is the title track on the band's third album. The intro keyboards that are sampled have a carnival style sound, and they appear in the middle of the Cypress Hill song.

SLY & THE FAMILY...  - Just Like A Baby  ><  JOHN LEGEND - She Don't Have To Know

John Legend released his hugely successful debut album in 2004. The album features his song She Don't Have To Know, the rhythm of the song is heavily based on Sly And The Family Stone's Just Like A Baby. That song is the second track on the There's A Riot Goin' On album. This album was created by Sly mostly alone in the studio with his rhythm box (drum machine), playing virtually all the instruments himself.

SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE - Family Affair    ><    BLACK EYED PEAS - Weekends

Weekends was the first single of The Black Eyed Peas second album. The song samples Sly And The Family Stone's Family Affair, which was the first number one hit with the rhythm put down by a drum machine. The song was recorded at Sly's home studio with Billy Preston playing keyboards, and Sly playing virtually else. Additional vocals were provided by Sly's sister Rose.

SLY AND THE...  - Everyday People  ><  ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT - People Everyday

Arrested Development's 1992 smash hit People Everyday was heavily based on Sly & The Family Stone's Everyday People. The message in the song is that all people are the same, no matter their color or background - a message the band was passionate about. Sly And The Family Stone was the first major band that was an integrated band - the groups lineup included blacks, whites and women. Bassist Larry Graham has said that this was the song where he introduced his famous "slap bass" technique.
