SUPER MARIO WORLD - Star Road >< D.R.A.M. - Cha Cha

In the video game Super Mario World, Star World is the eighth world, there are five Star Roads that will take you there. The music theme for Star World was composed by famed Japanese video game composer Koji Kondo. In 2014, Hampton, Virginia-based rapper D.R.A.M. (Does Real Ass Music) sampled the Star World theme for his hit song Cha Cha. When Drake released his massive hit Hotline Bling a few months later, D.R.A.M. insisted that Drake "jacked" his record.

Master video game composer Koji Kondo composed the music for the original Super Mario game in 1985. The previous year he was Nintendo's first hired video game composer. Koji has said the toughest composition on the game's soundtrack was the opening theme - also known as the "Ground Theme" or "Overworld Theme."
The classic theme has been sampled dozens of times, including by Brooklyn hip-hop group Coco Brovas for their 2000 song Super Brooklyn. |

In 1986, Koji Kondo composed the music for The Legend of Zelda video game - one of the most influential games and game soundtracks ever. The Dungeon Theme, also known as the Overworld Theme, has been copied in many other game compositions. The composition of the Dungeon Theme samples Deep Purples 1969 song April. The song is about the month of April. The Zelda music samples from the first part of April, featuring only Jon Lord (on piano and organ) and Richie Blackmore (on electric and acoustic guitars).

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA - Overworld Theme >< deadmau5 - You Need A Ladder

In 2009, Canadian electronic music producer deadmau5 sampled The Legend of Zelda's Overworld Theme for his instrumental track You Need A Ladder. The original song as performed by deadmau5 was at risk of a copyright infringement lawsuit, so the track was altered and vocals were added from German singer SOFI. The new version, titled SOFI Needs A Ladder won the 2011 Juno Award (Canadian version of a Grammy) for Best Dance Recording.

Invincible Mario make it's first appearance in Super Mario Bros. in 1985. If Mario or Luigi gets a Starman they will transform into Invincible Mario - also known as Rainbow Mario. When Invincible, Mario can outrun his enemies and is generally invincible for a short time. Invincible has come to be one of the most common power-ups in the Mario series, and the music was composed by Mario music maestro Koji Kondo. In 2009, the music was sampled by rapper Curren$y on his song Star Power.

Chun-Li was the first female fighter introduced in the Street Fighter series. The fighter is a professional Interpol agent and police officer - she is seeking to avenge her father's death. Chun-Li's name is Mandarin for "spring beauty." She appears in almost all the Street Fighter games, as well as in movies, mangas and various cameo appearances. Her musical theme was composed by Yoko Shimamura and Isao Abe. In 2012, Washington DC rapper Wale sampled the music on his tribute track Chun-Li. The track also features rapper Nipsy Hussle.

Super Mario 64 was released in 1996, and Nintendo composer Koji Kondo composed the score for the game. The game was the first Mario game with 3D gameplay, and it has been considered one of the greatest video games of all-time. The game was solely responsible for the great early success of the Nintendo 64 gaming system. The game's File Select music was sampled on a half dozen songs, including on 18-year old rapper Lil Yachty's track Run, Running off his commercial debut mixtape Lil Boat.

The biggest selling Tetris product has been Tetris for Game Boy. In the United States Tetris was was packaged with every new Game Boy system, which had a lot to do with the games popularity. In 1989, this version of the game introduced Korobeniki as the Tetris theme song. In 2012 the song was sampled on the Gucci Mane and 2 Chains track Set It Back.

CHEAP TRICK - Mighty Wings >< STREET FIGHTER 2 - Ken's Theme

Mighty Wings by Cheap Trick was the third single released off the Top Gun soundtrack. The song was written by German composer and producer Harold Faltermeyer. The song appears in the movie as an instrumental, and the vocal version is played during the end credits. Before composing the music for the 1991 Street Fighter II video game, Yoko Shimomura had just watched the film Top Gun. Mighty Wings was a big influence on Ken's theme in the video game, however Shimomura claims his copying the Cheap Trick song was completely unintentional.

Super Mario Brothers 3 is considered one of the great video games of all time, and it is the third biggest selling Nintendo game of all-time. It was first released in Japan in 1988, and then released a year and a half later in the United States. The music for the game was composed by Koji Kondo, who had done the music for Nintendo's previous Mario games. He has said this was the most difficult of his many game compositions. On the game's Castle Theme he is influenced by and copies from The Twilight Zone theme song.
