WAR - Magic Mountian    ><    DE LA SOUL - Potholes In My Lawn

De La Soul's Potholes In My Lawn was the second single off the 1989 debut album of the golden age hip-hop group. In 2004 it was the first hip-hop song to be played on Mars. The classic song samples Magic Mountain by War led by Eric Burdon - ex-singer of the Animals. The song was released as a b-side on War's first single Spill The Wine in 1970, the single that launched the band's career. It was also released in 1976 on the album Love Is All Around.

DETROIT EMERALDS - Baby Let Me Hold You   ><  DE LA SOUL  - Say No Go

Say No Go come's off De La Soul's 1989 debut album 3 Feet High And Rising. The song samples five other songs including 1981's I Can't Go For That by Hall & Oates. It also samples 1972's Baby Let Me Take You (In My Arms) by The Detroit Emeralds. Between 1968-1978 The Detroit Emeralds released numerous records, many of which have been popular to sample.

RIPPLE - I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky    ><    SPECIAL ED - I Got It Made

Brooklyn-born Edward Archer is better known as the rapper Special Ed. When Archer was 16 years old he released his signature song I Got It Made. The song appears on Special Ed's debut album Youngest In Charge, and it samples 1973's I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky by the 1970's Michigan funk band Ripple. In 1998 Youngest In Charge appeared on The Source's Best Rap Albums Ever list.

BOB JAMES - Nautilus    ><    SLICK RICK - Children's Story

Rapper Slick Rick has been called hip-hop's greatest storyteller. The British-Jamaican was born and raised in London. When he was 12 years old he moved to Brooklyn with his family where he became childhood friends with rapper Dana Dana. After his debut on Doug E. Fresh's 1985 classic The Show his popularity soared, and in 1988 he released his debut album featuring the single Children's Story. The song samples Nautilus by Bob James - the tenth most sampled song in hip-hop.

MELVIN BLISS - Synthetic Substitution    ><    ULTRAMAGNETIC MC'S - Ego Trippin'

The Ultramagnetic MC's is a hip-hop group formed by Kool Keith in 1984. The groups first single in 1984 was Ego Trippin', which was featured on their 1988 album Critical Beatdown. Ego Trippin' is the first song known to sample Sythetic Substitution by heavily-sampled rhythm and blues singer Melvin Bliss. That song is now considered one of the most sampled songs of all time.

SLY & FAMILY STONE - You Can Make It...   ><   JUNGLE BROTHERS - Because I Got It...

The influential Jungle Brothers were one of the first hip-hop groups to be produced by a house music producer. Not only did the group change the way that hip-hop and dance music related, they also pioneered the fusing of hip-hop and jazz. In 1988 they released their second single Because I Got It Like That, which appeared on their debut album that year Strait Out Of The Jungle. The song samples from the 1969 song You Can Make It If You Try by Sly and the Family Stone.

ALBERT KING - I'll Play The Blues For You    ><    BIG DADDY KANE - Young, Gifted...

Big Daddy Kane is considered one of the best MC's of the golden age of rap. In 1986 he became friends with rapper Biz Markie, and before long they joined Marly Marl's hip-hop Juice Crew. Kane released numerous hits on Cold Chillin' Records, and he wrote some of Biz's best-known songs. Kane released his second album It's A Big Daddy Thing in 1989. The album features the Marley Marl produced Young Gifted and Black. The sample from the song comes from Albert King's 1972 I'll Play The Blues For You.

THE BLACKBYRDS - Spaced Out    ><    MC LYTE - Cappucino

1974
Eighteen year old MC Lyte was the first solo female rapper to release a full length album when she released Lyte As A Rock in 1988. In 1989 she released her second album Eyes On This which featured her song Cappucino. That song samples the 1974 song Spaced Out by the Blackbyrds - a band that formed in Washington DC in 1973. The band was made up of Howard University students whose name reflected their passion for their inspiration - trumpeter Donald Byrd.

ALBERT KING - Cold Feet    ><    CHUBB ROCK - Just The Two Of Us

1968
New York-based rapper Chubb Rock had been a National Merit Scholar, and he was a pre-med student at Brown University before he dropped out to pursue rapping. In 1991 he released The One, his third album, which featured Just The Two Of Us. That song sampled blues singer and guitarist Albert King's 1968 song Cold Feet.

RUFUS THOMAS - Do The Funky Penguin    ><    BIG DADDY KANE - Pimpin' Ain't Easy

Pimpin' Ain't Easy is a song off Big Daddy Kane's second album It's A Big Daddy Thing in 1989. On the song Kane samples from 1971's Do The Funky Penguin by funk and soul singer and comedian Rufus Thomas. In 1943 Thomas released his first record, and in the 1950's he was signed to Sun Records. By 1963 Thomas was with Stax Records where he enjoyed his prime until the early 1970's
