In 1997 emcee and rapper KRS-One released his third studio album I Got Next. The sample-filled album with appearances from mainstream hip-hop artists was a shock to some fans of the notoriously anti-mainstream emcee. BBC radio's Tim Westwood famously bashed KRS-One, accusing him of abandoning his style and selling out. The album, KRS-One's best-selling solo release, features the song A Friend, which samples from the 1965 song Round Midnight by Luchi De Jesus.

In 1995 Brooklyn-based rap duo Das EFX released their third album Hold It Down. The album's top-charting single Real Hip-Hop features emcee KRS-One, and the same version of the song appears on KRS-One's 1995 self-titled album. The song samples Norman Connor's cover of Pharaoh Sander's The Creator Has A Master Plan. That song is featured on Connor's 1976 album You Are My Starship. On the cover of the album Connor's poses on the boat of actor John Wayne.

In 1998 rapper Eminem released his major label debut The Slim Shady LP featuring the hit single My Name Is (Slim Shady). Producer Dr Dre wanted to sample British poet and musician Labi Saffri's 1975 song I Got The... for the rhythm track. Openly gay Saffri objected to some of the lyrics for attacking women and gays, after some changes by Eminem the sample was cleared for use. The song's lyrics remained controversial however, Eminem's mother sued him for 10 million dollars for insinuating that she was drug abuser.

Gang Starr released their fourth studio album in 1994 - Hard To Earn. It was the rap duo's first album to sport the "Parental Advisory" label. One of the albums standout tracks is Code Of The Streets, which samples saxophonist Monk Higgins 1969 song Little Green Apples. That song is featured on Higgin's second solo album Extra Soul Perception. Higgins released several albums between 1968-1975, most of his hit were instrumentals.

Lucien Revolucien was a influential 1990's hip-hop artist and producer from France. In 1989 he appeared on Afrika Bambaataa's Hip-Hop Against Apartheid/L'Unite Africaine, and he was featured on The Jungle Brothers' Done By The Forces Of Nature. In 1990 A Tribe Called Quest released their debut album featuring the song Luck Of Lucien - which was a dedication to Lucien, who provided background vocals for the track. The song samples the 1974 song Forty Days by Billy Brooks.

In 1995 hip-hop duo Group Home released their debut album Livin' Proof. The duo was born out of the Gang Starr Foundation, and the album was almost entirely produced by DJ Premier - it is considered to be one of best works. Supa Star, the most successful song off the album, samples from a half dozen songs including Cameo's 1984 song Hangin' Downtown. That song appears on the funk band's tenth album released in 1984 - She's Strange.

Dirt All By My Lonely was the first single, and the least successful single, off the fifth album from hip-hop trio Naughty By Nature. After releasing the album in 1999 group members DJ Kay Gee and Treach got into a dispute over finances, resulting in Kay Gee's departure. In 2006, after a relatively unsuccessful sixth album from the downsized Naughty By Nature, Kay Gee rejoined the band. Dirt All By My Lonely samples The Morning Song off Les McCan's 1974 album Another Beginning.

The 1992 single Know The Ledge was originally released as the theme song to the movie Juice. The song, one of the hip-hop duo's last hits together, samples Nat Adderley's Rise Sally Rise from the 1968 album The Scavenger. In 1997 Crystal Method sampled the "I Guess I Didn't Know" vocal for their international breakbeat hit Busy Child. That song is one of the biggest hits from the electronic music duo, and it has been prominently featured in many movies and compilations.

After the debut album from hip-hop group Brand Nubian, lead rapper Grand Puba and DJ Alamo split from group. Remaining members Sadat X and Lord Jamar released a second album - In God We Trust. The album features the song Punks Jump Up Do Get Beat Down, which charted despite the notoriously homophobic line in Sadat X's rap. The song, the only Diamond D-produced track on the album, samples jazz saxophonist Lou Donaldson's 1969 cover of It's Your Thing.

Watch Out Now was the most commercially successful single from The Beatnuts. The 1999 song samples from one of the final songs credited to influential recording engineer and bandleader Enoch Light -his 1975 cover of Hijack. In 2002 hip-hop production duo The Trackmasters produced J-Lo's hit single Jenny From The Block, which sampled from the Enoch Light song. The Beatnuts were angry because song had exploited the beats they had discovered without crediting them. After publicly complaining and dissing The Trackmasters in their 2004 song Confused Rapper, an agreement was made to pay royalties to Juju and Psycho Lee - The Beatnuts.
