In 1972, former Temptations frontman Eddie Kendricks released his second studio album People... Hold On. After leaving the Temptations in 1970, Kendricks struggled to produce a hit until he released this breakout album. The album featured the song Girl You Need A Change Of Mind - at over seven minutes it was one of the first disco/dance records. Several years before 12-inch singles were made, club DJ's were only playing tracks directly off the album, short recordings that are formatted for radio. Because of the song's length, Motown also released a shorter version that was edited for radio. This song was slow to catch on commercially, but it's popularity in east coast black and gay clubs moved the song up in the charts in 1973, and it helped to solidify Kendrick's solo career
