In 1986, the new jack swing group Club Nouveau was created by performer/producer Jay King. The group's name, which means "new club" in French, was inspired by the 1986 breakup of Timex Social Club - a group that had been produced by King. The group's debut album Life Love & Pain, released the same year, featured four consecutive hit singles. The final single off the album was Why You Treat Me So Bad, which peaked at number two on the charts. The song sampled it's hook from Thinking About Ya - a single from Timex Social Club in 1986. That hook has been sampled dozen's of times since on other songs, including The Luniz 1995 hit I Got Five On It and Ashanti's 2004 song Only You.
