The Shadow's Apache from 1960 is considered one of the best best guitar tracks, and best instrumental tracks of all-time. Incredible Bongo Band's 1973 version with the prized bongo drum intro didn't gain a lot of attention when it was released, but ultimately has come to be called "hip-hop's national anthem." Not only did the Sugarhill Gang cover that version in 1981 with their added rap, it has also been covered or sampled dozens of times. Familiar examples include: West Street Mob, Beastie Boys, Sir Mix-a-Lot, MC Hammer, C & C Music Factory, Nas and Missy.

This is the rarely seen original video produced by Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Band. Wright's nephew was rapper Easy-E of the notorious L.A. rap group N.W.A., this 1970 single was famously sampled by N.W.A. in 1989 for their hit single Express Yourself. More recently this timeless jam has been featured in commercials for ipad and Coffee-Mate, and was used in one of the Grand Theft Auto video games. Here is the 1985 groove sampled for LL Cool J's Loungin rmx, by heavily-sampled keyborder/ singer Bernard Wright. Wright was born in 1963 and grew up in Jamiaca, Queens, and his classmates included Slick Rick and Dana Dane. At 13 years old he was touring with Lenny White, and he played with Tom Brown when he was 16. Wright, who continues to play keyboards, released only 5 albums, all between 1981-1990. This is the 1956 original Italian version of 2010's club smash hit "We No Speak No Americano "by Australian duo Yolanda Be Cool. This original version is one of the best know songs by Renato Carosone, one of the greatest figures in Italian music. It was sung by in english by Sophia Loren in the movie "It Started In Naples," and it was also featured in the 1999 movie "The Talented Mr. Ripley." The translation of the original version is "You want to be American." This fun song was also sampled by Lou Bega, Don Omar, and by Pitbull. This song made famous by Cher was written by her then-husband Sonny Bono in 1966. This version by Nancy Sinatra was released the same year, featuring a cool tremolo effect guitar played by Billy Strange. The same year other versions of the song were also released by Stevie Wonder and others, and over the following years many more have recorded this song. This stunning Nancy Sinatra version remained somewhat obscure until 2002, when it was used to open the movie Kill Bill Volume 1. This song makes me wish I had kept my 8-track. This 1974 funk classic was Mercury Record's forth release in Quadraphonic - a four-channel stereo mix only available on 8-track tape format. Although the Ohio Players didn't have any big hits until 1973's Funky Worm, the band was formed way back in 1959 in Dayton, Ohio as the Ohio Untouchables. The band has been officially deceased since 2002, bass player Marshall Jones is the only surviving member. Is this classic 1980 funk track from jazz trumpeter Tom Browne really a song about Betty Boop? Let it get into you and you will know it's Jamaica funk - that's what it is. The song is a memoir about growing up in Jamaica, his hometown neighborhood in Queens, New York. This timeless groove has long history of selling records - it's been sampled by N.W.A., EPMD, Mariah Carey, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, The Black Eyed Peas and many others. I alway love to drop this video in the club for the unsuspecting crowd. In this fantastic segment from the 1976 hindi film Jyoti, a sexy Lata Mangeshkar sings about how beautiful her body is. The infectious groove was sampled by Dr Dre for 2002's hit song Addictive by Truth Hurts featuring Rakim. I imagine that the truth hurts for the singer of the more recent one-hit wonder - the original version reigns supreme. There is no better place to start this lounge-core blog. This ultra mod track is as catchy as it is campy - a fun track for any DJ to drop on a hammered crowd at the end of the night. When Tom Jones recorded what was to be his signature song he was an unknown. This second release of his was #1 on the UK charts in 1965, and at the time it was only being played by UK pirate radio stations - the BBC refused to play it due to Jones' sexy image. This classic Christmas hip-hop cut is off the 1996 Christmas On Death Row compilation.
