Assala Mostafa Hatem Nasri is a Syrian musician and TV personality, Her father was a famous composer and singer, and she began her career in singing at four years old. Her commercial success started in 1999 when she was 22. After a stunning performance on Bahrain's Independence Day, the Bahraini King granted he a second citizenship to the country. In 2012 rapper A$AP Rocky sampled Assala'a 2003's song Sinin for  1 Train - the most successful song of his third album Long Live ASAP.

Sherine is an Egyptian singer and actress. As a young singer Sherine dropped out of the Egyptian Music Institute in her second year, and she struggled conquering obstacles climbing to the top. In 2014, due to a dispute with Egyptian actor and singer Sherif Mounir, Sherene was fined and sentenced to six months in prison. In 2007 producer Timbaland sampled Sherine's recently released Al Sa'ban for Make Me Better - the third single from rapper Fabolous featuring Ne-Yo.

The San Francisco-based chicano band Malo was fronted by Jorge Santana, the brother of legendary rock guitarist Carlos Santana. Their most successful hit Suavecito was written by band member Richard Bean in high school as a poem for a girl in his algebra class. In 1999 rock band Sugar Ray sampled Suavecito on the chorus of their hit single Every Morning. The band had sampled the west coast low rider anthem from Malo because it reminded them of growing up in California.

Marco Antonio Muniz is a well-known romantic singer from Mexico. Muniz has made it known that Puerto Rico is his second home, and he is considered by many Puerto Ricans to be an honorary citizen there. In 1999 The Beatnuts sampled Muniz's Se Acabo for their song of the same title. The song is the final track on their most commercially successful album - A Musical Massacre.

Hossam Ramzy is an internationally loved Egyptian composer and percussionist. The wealthy musician moved to London in the 1970's and earned himself the nickname "The Sultan Of Swing" because of his recordings there. He has worked with numerous western superstars, and he has worked on numerous soundtracks. His more recent work include Shakira's She Wolf album. Ramzy's 1994 song Inta Omri was sampled by Timberland in 2001 for Raise Up - Petey Pablo's debut single.

Willie Anthony Colon is a New York born Puerto Rican (Nuyorican) musician and activist. When Colon was 15 he was signed to Fania Records, and at 17 he released his first album. He has been a social and political activist since the age of 15. In 1995 he became the first minority to serve on the board of directors at ASCAP. Rapper Pitbull sampled Colon's 1971 song La Murga for the song Come See Me off his second studio album in 2006.

FELA KUTI - Na Poi    ><    NAS & ALICIA KEYS - Warrior Song

In 2002 rapper Nas released his sixth studio album God's Son. The album is considered by many to be one of the rapper's best albums, it spawned several hit singles such as Made You Look, Get Down and I Can. On Warrior Song, featuring Alicia Keys, Nas samples Nigerian musician and composer Fela Kuti's 1972 single Na Poi. Kuti's sixteen minute afrobeat song was recorded in Lagos in 1971 and released as a single.

Blackaliciousis a California based hip-hop duo. In 2010 they released the single Toy Jackpot which samples Azzurro. a 1968 hit song from famous Italian singer/songwriter and actor/director  Adriano Celentano. In the 1979 classic song by Ian Dury And The Blockheads - Reasons to Be Cheerful - Celentano is mentioned as one reason to be cheerful.

After Infamy, an unexpectedly  commercial album from Mobb Deep in 2001, the hip-hop duo was attacked with accusations of selling out. By 2003 they had split with Loud Records and announced that they were free agents.  In 2003 Mobb Deep released the single The Illist on independent label Landspeed Records. The song samples the 1983 Rocio Jurado song No Te Enfades.

MANU DIBANGO - Weya    ><    AFRIKA BAMBAATAA - Renegades Of Funk

1974
Afrika Bambaataa and The Soulsonic Force released the single Renegades Of Funk in 1983. Bambaataa's song was the second follow-up single to his hugely successful debut Planet Rock, both of which were produced and mixed by DJ/producer Arthur Baker. The vocal chant from Renegades Of Funk comes from Manu Dibango's 1974 song Weya. In 2000 rock group Rage Against The Machine featured a cover of Renegades Of Funk on their Renegades album.
